10 examples of storage devices
Today we will discuss some primary and secondary storage devices which can store data either temporarily or permanently.
Random-access memory is one of the most important memory not only in computers, another electronic device just like tablets, smartphones also required. RAM is a volatile memory, it can store data until the computer is turned off. RAM provides space to your computer to read and write data by the help of the CPU (central processing unit). When you are using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, notepad, paint or playing any game that means that time you are using Primary memory(RAM). Sometimes we have seen that the task processing time is very slow when we use so many application at the same time in your computer, that means every application are working on RAM, but you can reduce the processing time by the help of increasing the RAM size.
There are two types of RAM......
1. SRAM (Static Random-Access Memory)
2. DRAM (Dynamic Random-Access Memory)
Read Only Memory is the full form of ROM. Unlike RAM (Random Access Memory), ROM is a non-volatile memory, you can only read but you can't write anything on this memory. RAM is a Volatile memory that's why RAM can't store data permanently but ROM is different than RAM, ROM can store data permanently. This chip is very essential for boot-up, it performs major input/output tasks and holds programs. ROM not only used inside of the computer, but there are also so many other electronic devices are available in the market where ROM is used.
Now we will discuss the various types of ROM...
1.Programmable Read-Only Memory (PROM)
2.Erasable and Programmable Read-Only Memory (EPROM)
3.Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM)
4.Masked ROM (MROM)
A USB Flash Drive is a small, ultra-portable storage device that is used to store data and transfer information. Flash drives are also called as pen-drives, jump-drives, and thumb-drives. Basically, every USB flash drive is re-writable and removable. Actually, USB Flash Drive is robust because there are no moving parts. At the time of the First stage, the size of USB Flash Drive was just like 8 MB and now the size of USB Flash Drive is just like 2 GB to 1 TB.
A Memory Card is a small storage device just like 16 MB to 64 GB and this storage device is used for storing media and data files. Memory card is a Non-Volatile, a permanent storage device that is used inside of Phone, Camera, and many other electronic devices. There are so many types of memory cards in the market, and it's totally depended on size.

The CD was created by Philips factory in Germany in August 1982. Compact Disk is the full form of CD, it looks like a flat, round and the measures of the standard CD is 120 millimeters and across 1.2 mm thick. The size of the Compact Disk is 650 Megabytes to 700 Megabytes. A compact Disk is a portable storage medium that can store audio, video, picture, and also Data.
DVD (Digital Video Disk) is an optical disk format invented and developed in 1995. The Capacity of CD is 4.7 GB and the Weight is 16 grams. The Compact Disk can store any kind of digital media just like video, audio, picture, game, software, data. Actually, the DVD is just like a ROM because data can only be read and not written. DVD can be single side or double side both, the size of a single side DVD is 4.7 GB and the size of the double-sided DVD is 9.4 GB.
IBM company’s engineer created the first Hard Disk Drive in 1953. The size of Hard The disk was just like two refrigerators. A Hard Disk Drive is a non-volatile a secondary storage device, here data can store permanently. unlike RAM, it is non-volatile means data is retained when the computer is turned off. A Hard Disk Drive is actually a set of stacked disks. The first production IBM hard The disk was 305 disk storage which was shipped in 1957.
Punch the card is a piece of stiff paper, which is used to hold digital data. Punch cards also known as Hollerith cards, At the time of 1900, that time Punch cards were the primary device of storing and retrieving the data. Still, now some voting machine also uses punched cards to record votes.
Cloud Storage is one type of service in which data is maintained, managed and stored on remote servers accessed from the internet. Cloud Storage services allow people to store any type of data online so that people can access their data from any location via the Internet. Actually, this is the payable service. and it's totally maintained, operated and managed by a cloud storage service provider.
Magnetic tape was invented by Fritz Pfleumer in 1928. It can only store sound recording, this is one of the oldest technologies for electronic data storage. Magnetic tape is very high capacity, low cost and also long durability, but now the use of Magnetic tape is very low because so many other devices are available except Magnetic tape.
